The Structure of an Official Doctor's Certificate
A legitimate doctor's medical certificate follows a precise structure derived from medical council regulations and institutional requirements. Understanding this structure helps you verify authenticity and know what to expect when obtaining one.
Letterhead Requirements
The most important visual element of an authentic certificate is the hospital/clinic letterhead, which must include:
- Hospital/clinic name (as registered with health authorities)
- Hospital registration number
- Full address including PIN code
- Phone number (verifiable)
- GSTIN (for hospital billing, optional but common)
Doctor's Credentials Section
At the bottom of every certificate, the issuing doctor's information must appear:
- Full name with prefix "Dr."
- Qualification (MBBS, MD, MS, DNB, etc.)
- Medical Council Registration Number (verifiable at nmc.org.in)
- Physical signature (not a stamp of the signature)
- Hospital stamp (must match letterhead)
How to Verify a Certificate is Genuine
- Call the hospital on the number listed on the certificate and ask if the doctor practices there
- Verify the doctor's registration number at nmc.org.in (National Medical Commission)
- Check that the stamp matches the hospital name and address on the letterhead
- Look for specific patient details — generic/blank details are a red flag
